Paekakariki FM Has Live Bird Calls
Station heard all over world

Whether in Paris, New York, Paraparaumu or Paekakariki, people can tune in to the new Paekakariki FM.
The community radio station on 88.2FM started two weeks ago, and can be heard in Paekakariki on
radio, or streaming online anywhere.
The station is Paekakariki's latest community media platform since the Paekakariki Expressed
newspaper folded about 18 months ago.
Shows run from 5pm until 11pm on Sundays and are repeated each day.
Mark Amery, who hosts a two-hour show from 6pm until 8pm including news, interviews, and musical
performances, said the station is in its early stages.
"It's just amazing actually. It's beautiful. I think we're blessed, just with the physical nature of
Paekakariki that it has a certain sense of self-containment, and a strong sense of community.
"It's a great opportunity to amplify that and use it. We did have a really strong local newspaper up
until a year-and-a-half ago, and this station hopes to fill that gap to some degree."
The first broadcast on the station was on February 17, followed by a second on February 24.
Each day the Sunday broadcast is repeated at the same time for anyone who missed the show, and
is streamed online at paekakariki.org.nz.
Amery said there had been shows on hip hop, indie music, country and folk, and one about
collecting local voices.
"We started with a local iwi show, a Maori indigenous show, so we've got everything from metal through
to tweenie pop, and we're trying to get that diversity."
Listeners in Paekakariki can tune in to the station on radio, and Avery said it could also stretch to
high points in Raumati South, and parts of Pukerua Bay.
One commenter on the station's Facebook page confirmed he was listening from Paris.
"Thanks for the shout out Jim! We are indeed listening in Paris," Christian Judge said on Facebook,
referring to Jim Ebenhoh's indie rock/pop show at 9pm.
Mr Amery said the station was on a three-month pilot period, after which the community would
decide how it proceeded.
"It's all up to the local community about how we go about developing the station."
